Our Memories

Poodle Skirts were in

Bobbie and Wayne want to share some past photos.
"Photos of Drive-In Restaurants and more."

Just to hang out, eat those cheeseburgers & fries or onion rings, drink malts
and listen to that "Good Old Rock & Roll Music"

Check out some of these. These were the drive-ins we went to in the Tri-Cities area.

  • Colonial Drive-In
It was located on Route 460 East of Petersburg. I wish we had some pics of the Colonial Restaurant. Boy did we have some good times here. Good onion rings, Bar-B-Q, Cheeseburgers, FF, Limeaid, and pie. The Colonial was where all the high school kids from the area hung out after the football games and the movies were out. You ordered by speaker, just like at the drive-in movies, but the carhops brought the food. Kids were everywhere and if you were driving your old rod and had trouble with it, there were guys ready to help get the old heap running.

  • Kelly's Drive-In
There was also a Kelly's Drive-In located on Route 301, Crater Rd., that lots of Kids liked. It opened in the 70's. You had to go in to get your food. This photo is approximately what it looked like. Click on to enlarge for veiwing.

  • Little Charlie's Drive-In
It was located on Route 301, Crater Rd, and had cheap prices with good food, we believed? There were carhops that brought the orders. It started having a rough crowd hanging around and we went else where.

  • Shoney's Restaurant & Drive-In
It was located on Route 301, Crater Rd, just outside the Petersburg City Limits. It opened in the 70's and had dining for the older people inside as well as a Drive-In under canopies outside. The drive-in soon died out due to the wrong crowd hanging around and they went to all inside dining.

  • McDonald's Drive-In
There was also a McDonald's Drive-In located on Crater Rd, but there weren't any car hops. Burgers, FF, and dinks only $0.15 each. The Kids liked when it opened in the late 60's., as it was cheap like Kelly's. You had to go in to get your food. This photo is approximately what it looked like. Click on to enlarge for veiwing.

  • Little Charlie's Drive-In
It was located on Route 301, Crater Rd.

  • Rainbow Drive-In
It was located on Route 1 & 301, Boulevard, at the northern end of Colonial Heights. Now this is where most of the kids from Colonial Heights and southern Chesterfield county hung out. It was run by Lou and and his wife, Lil, who loved the Kids coming there. The front opened up in good weather and the carhops (high school girls) brought your order. The food was the greatest, since Lou did the cooking. It was simply one of the best places to get a cheeseburger around. It sold and was turned into all inside dining, but has never seen the activity of the 50's thru 70's. Just click on to enlarge for viewing.

  • Elmo's Bar-B-Q
This was located on Route 36 in Prince George County just west of Hopewell, VA. It had inside dining with a Drive-In under a canopy. Carhops would take and deliver the order. It had good food and all the Kids around Hopewell and Prince George hung out on Friday and Saturday nights.
