Photo of Wayne with Wife Bobbie - 1963
Wayne shares some past photos. "Photos of Old Cars that they Loved and that made a difference in their lives."
Check out some of these. These were real killers, if you know what we mean? We will have photos of them soon. Click on to enlarge for better viewing and your back button to return to this page.
1947 Plymouth Coupe
It had a 6 cylinder with straight drive transmission. It was previously owned by an elderly guy that loved cigars. Gosh, we can still remember the smell. It wasn't what Wayne wanted, but it did run well and got the job done. Cost $125.00 and the insurance was $200 per year.
1953 Ford Sunliner Convertible It had a flat head V8 with 2 barrell, dual exhaust and a Ford-A-Matic Transmission. It was blue with blue interior and ran very strong except in hot weather when it would vapor lock. Always picked the most congested
area where all the Kids hung out? Oh well, we got throught it.
1955 Ford Fairlane Sedan
This was the first fast car Wayne owned. It was white with green interior, had a 272 CI V8 and straight drive. Wayne replaed the engine with a 292 CI shortly after
getting the car along with the interior which was replaced with red & white vinyl. It was lowered 3 inches in the front and rear and sported shorty lake pipes,
bar grille, 60 Dodge tail lights and a new white paint job. Wayne drove it to high school and Wayne and Bobbie got married in it in 1962 and then the goodies
had to go. This is Bobbie setting on the hood. Bobbie helped Wayne keep this car running and even helped change the transmission while she was expecting
Wayne Junior. Her Grandmother really got upset when she saw Bobbie under the car with grease running down her arms. We won't repeat what she had to say.
Wayne, Jr. was born in April 1963 and things started to change.
1956 Chevrolet Belair Coupe
This
was purchased in late 1963. It was tropical blue with black & white interior, a 265 power pack engine, powerglide transmission, and dual exhaust. That is Wayne Junior,
approximate age 20 months, standing next to the car. He is ready to ride again. Wasn't long before the glide had to go. It was replaced with a three speed with floor shift,
truck 11" 12 spring clutch, and the engine received a little extra something as well. The four barrell carb was replaced with a
Corvette 2-4 barrell intake and carbs and the cam was replaced with a solid lift 270 HP 283 CI cam. It ran very strong, but
the gas mileage was only 13 mph at best. Surely couldn't stand the two carbs, so they were removed so we could afford to
drive it, even though high test gas was only $0.32 per gallon.
1965 Comet Cyclone
Bobbie's Dad sold Mercury's and showed us pictures of the new Cyclone that would be available in 1965. We ordered one from the brochure in September of
1964 at a cost of $2557.00. It got stuck in the Auto Workers Strike and didn't get off the assembly line on time. When it finally came in it was missing trim, hub
caps, and some other items. The guys at the dealership finished putting it together. It was our first new car and boy did we take care of it. It was burgany with
black interior, console, 4 speed, tach, and a 289 CI 225 HP engine.
1966 Comet Cyclone GT
We found out in July 1965 that Mercury was coming out with a larger engine for 1966 and had to get one. We sold our 1965 for almost what we paid for it
and ordered a new one in November. This was to be a real killer. It was blue with blue interior, bucket seats, console, had a 390 CI with 335 HP, a 4 speed, 350
ratio locking rear, wide oval Goodyear tires and had more power than you could safely use on the streets. Paid $3300 cash for it with no trade-in.
1932 Chevy Sedan
We had several other cars but nothing worth mentioning, until 1987 when Wayne bought a 1932 Chevy and made a street rod out of it. It had a 350 Chevy
engine, turbo 400 transmission, Mustang front end suspension, Chevy 10 bolt rear, airtique heat/ac, and power disc brakes. It was driven almost 30,000
miles to shows and cruise-ins. We attended shows in VA, TN, SC, PA, NC, OH, KY, etc. Bobbie drove it the last two years we owned it. We finally had to
sell it when Wayne's health wouldn't allow him to get in to ride anymore.
1967 Chevy Nova SS Coupe
We bought this from a guy that bought it in 1984 to restore and needed to sell it quick. We didn't even want the car,
but the price was right. It was completely apart. No glass, interior, no suspension, rear end gears missing, body had been stripped of doors, and front
end, sand blasted and you name it. It sat in our garage from 1990 until 1995 before we started fixing it. Didn't have a engine or transmission and all the
other parts were in boxes, since it had been taken completely apart by the previous owner. Needed new rubber moldings, windshield, rear window.
interior, tires, wheels, grille, exterior trim, brakes, suspension rebuilt, and you name it. Many parts had been lost, since it had been apart so long.
What a time it took to find what we needed and get it together. Parts were found and shipped in from as far away as California. It was finally
finished in August 2001. What a project. If you ever have had any thoughts about buying one that is apart, DON'T.
Bobbie helped Wayne build this car. She painted the inside, welded in floor pans, the panel behind the rear window, wired
the gauges under the dash and many other things. She has become quite a mechanic over the years. Well it's together now
and sports a 350 CI engine, 1978 Corvette distributor, 270H Comp Cam, Carter 600 carb, Eldelbrock intake, power brakes,
3.36 Richmond gears, GM posi-traction unit, 205-65-15 BFG tires on 7" rally wheels with small center caps, black roll &
pleat interior, Custom Auto radio with cassett, black PPG base/coat clear/coat paint job.. It runs and looks great. Special
Thanks to Classic Industries, Summit Racing, J&W Nova, and Balch Automotive and Collision, Inc, Auto Parts, Inc, and
Wayne's brother, Larry, for all the help with this project.
